Large cities all over the world are experiencing continuous growth. By 2030, over 60% of the world’s population will be living in cities. Blocked roads, a lack of parking facilities and air and noise pollution are the rule rather than the exception. Milan has one of the highest private vehicle ownership rates in Europe and has been much affected by these developments; it is now intensively engaged in finding sustainable urban mobility solutions.
In this study we are working together with Agenzia Mobilità Ambiente e Territorio in Milan (AMAT) to analyse the effects of shared and autonomous robo-taxis on traffic flow and emission values in Milan. The results rely on agent-based microsimulations and indicate that approximately 9,000 six-seater microbuses will bring the targets of this metropolis within reach. Individual traffic can be reduced by 30% and traffic jams avoided, emissions can be reduced by 40% and sustainability targets can be met.
